The tone possibilities available are almost overwhelming. You can dial in everything from shimmery, glassy cleans to psuedo-PAF growl.

I read alot of press and reviews of this system prior to pulling the trigger and I knew folks have either a love or a hate relationship with these pickups. But, I do NOT understand where terms like "sterile", "brittle" or "cold" come from? I find the system to be everything EMG markets it as being.

This system can nail the same sounds as the Clapton, but do SO much more. I have about 15 hours into it since Friday night and I continue to find different COOL tones by a tiny adjustment in the active circuits. Oct 10, 2. Messages: 5, Good luck! Oct 10, 3. Messages: 2, Oct 10, 4.Including the V57 candy apple red. While older sets needed to be soldered, the current one has a solderless system making them very easy to install. The SA single coils are similar to 60s era Fender pickups, with a distinct bell-like chime and nicely rounded low end.

They do have a tad more output though, which adds more mid range too.

The active pre-amps drive the signal through large pedal boards much like a buffered pedal but they also add a slight compression to the tone. This evens out some of the high transients, which can be a good thing on brighter sounding guitars but it also makes the pickups somewhat less dynamic and open sounding compared to vintage style passive single coils.

A matter of taste, I guess. Much of the magic lies in the active tone controls. David Gilmour would use the tone controls with care, only boosting the frequencies slightly, and surely the actual settings depended on what he needed right there and then based on how the guitar sounded in a specific environment. Much like how you would use an EQ or compressor pedal.

I can see how it might be useful for adding a bit of sparkle to darker sounding guitars and amps, but to my ears it also makes the SA pickups sound slightly processed and the top end gets very ice-picky very fast. Boosting the SPC just slightly makes a huge difference.

Fivem holsters

The guitar cuts through more and it makes everything sound smoother and more dynamic. I still prefer passive pickups as they, to me, sound more dynamic and they just seem to respond better to my playing and the amps and pedals I use.

Ive yet to make it side by side with the input jack. But love the DG Here is a tip. My EMG DG20 sat in the closet for 10 years because after I installed it, I would leave the guitar plugged in and that drained the battery.

I got tired of taking the pickguard assembly loose.

Recently, Fishman came out with a rechargeable Battery Pack that replaces the back cover on a Stratocaster. Iam looking for that Gillmore tone. The battery should be placed behind the last tone pot. Should fit in right there. Would that be crazy? If I could only own one guitar to do everything and cater for any situation as a pro player, it would be some kind of Strat loaded with the EMG DG This is the EMG assembly that Dave Gilmour first started using in his red Strat way back in and has used on and off both live and in the studio ever since.

The EMG SA is an absolutely fantastic sounding single coil type pick up and I own many guitars loaded with this very pick up. You may have seen me using my vintage Valley Arts guitars in GI reviews, and this is the pickup that came as standard in those guitars coupled with an EMG 85 humbucker in the bridge.

In my experience, EMGs do bring out the character of the wood in your guitar so do not believe what you read by some of the disbelievers out there, as they can definitely sound fat, vintage, smooth or in your face. If you are good with tone, then EMGs make everything easier!

Like all EMGs they are dead silent, which is exactly what you want for studio use, or when using high gain, or on big stages with lighting rigs. Because EMGs are active and run off a 9v battery, they will power through any cable length without loss of tone, and if you have a big pedal board, they send undiluted signal to your amp, whether your pedals are true bypass or not. Yes, you do have to have a battery situated somewhere in your guitar to supply the tiny current EMGs need, and occasionally it will need changing, but if you unplug your guitar cable when the guitar is not in use, we are talking a long time between battery changes.

I have had years of battery life out of my guitars. This is actually a mid boost and a great secret weapon. As you wind it up you get a very fat sounding SA pick up that is bordering on humbucker in character.

It's absolutely perfect for singing solos or any hi gain work. There is a tiny amount of increased hiss as you push it to full power, much like kicking in a boost pedal, but as you would probably use it on the fly, you would never hear it in use. On the second tone pot you have an EXG expander, which drops the mids and boosts the bottom and top.

Great for clean rhythm or articulate acoustic type parts. When you add up the tonal options of a 5-way switch, three SA pups, an EXG and an SPC, you can see why I say if could only own 1 guitar, I would go for this assembly on a good Strat, because you will be able to deal with any style in any situation.

So, how does it work on our test Squier? Well, the DG20 is unquestionably an instant upgrade for any average Stratocaster. Obviously you would not interfere with anything too valuable or vintage or you could, but please don't! I understand to fit the DG20 no soldering is required and as long as you have room for a battery somewhere on board see the comments from James Collins about this and our test bed Squier - Ed.

Age: 60 Messages: The overall tone is bright especially the bridge pickup. Sounds greate clean, but harsh not smooth with compression or distortion. Everything is connected the way it should be. Has anyone had anything like that with this pickup set? Messages: 9, Also try lower settings on your pedals then you are used to using I till have a EC boost circuit in one of them and I have to be careful with it and pedals. Hope this helps.

ElectgumboOct 17, Age: 45 Messages: 8, I didn't use any solderless connections or boosters or anything else. Just soldered the P'ups in and went bare bones and they sound great, Nice and warm. In fact, I even run them on 18V most of the time for more headroom. BelieverOct 17, I have tried different settings. I think its the SPC that controlls the highs and lows.

emg dg20

I have that turned down to 2 or 3 to lower the highs. I have a pre amp in my other strat and have to be careful with its input to my peddle.

You mean like on a D box high and low Z? Electgumbo likes this. Ok, thanks for the info. I have often been concerned with input clipping. The brightness still concerns my.

Like maybe something is wrong. Age: 54 Messages: 6, The SPC and Expander are two different things. I have the DG20 in my Strat, and its never harsh. In fact sometimes its almost too smooth sounding. The SPC is a mid boost with a low and high roll off.

EMG DG20 David Gilmour Pickups

The EXG Expander boosts lows and highs while lowering mids, and can easily become wolly and harsh if cranked with certain amp and pedal settings.

Keep in mind the DG20 is nothing like a stock set up, and requires a different way of approaching the way you get your tones in comparison to a stock passive pick up Strat. TheDuckOct 17, Jason99 and Electgumbo like this.
